He is known for the trio that fought against Muhammad Ali, in which Norton won the first victory. the split decision, losing second by the split decision, and losing in the end by a controversial unanimous decision. Norton also played a fight against Larry Holmes in 1978, nearly losing in a farewell decision. Norton retired from boxing in 1981 and entered the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992.
